Honestly, I\u2019m scared. But also hopeful that this community cares with a passion. Please donate towards my legal defense.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If you can help, please help. Privacy is not a crime. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R4vauNLRB4\">https:\/\/t.co\/R4vauNLRB4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Edward Snowden (@Snowden) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Snowden\/status\/1749860224612159834?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storm, and Roman Semenov (another Tornado Cash developer) are currently facing allegations of money laundering and sanctions <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violations in the U.S, while Pertsev is slapped with similar allegations in the Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These allegations are related to Tornado Cash, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tumbler that mixes crypto assets with others, so as to obscure the trail back to the asset\u2019s original source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August 2022, the mixing service was<a href=\"https:\/\/coinfomania.com\/us-treasury-tornado-cash-sanction\/\"> blacklisted<\/a> by the U.S. Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for its role in laundering more than $7 billion worth of cryptocurrencies, including $455 million stolen in 2022 by\u00a0 North Korean-linked hacking organization Lazarus Group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the U.S. government\u2019s sanction, Tornado Cash\u2019s domain name was taken down, and GitHub removed its repository and suspended the creators\u2019 accounts. Stablecoin issuer Circle also froze $75,000 in USD Coin from Ethereum addresses belonging to Tornado Cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto Community Backs Tornado Cash Developers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pertsev was arrested in Amsterdam on August 10,\u00a0 2022, on suspicion of &#8220;involvement in concealing criminal financial flows and facilitating money laundering through the mixing of cryptocurrencies\u201d through Tornado Cash. Pertsev remains in<a href=\"https:\/\/coinfomania.com\/tornado-cash-developer-will-be-detained-until-february-report\/\"> custody<\/a> in the Netherlands. A year later, Storm was arrested in Washington State on allegations of assisting in money laundering worth $1 billion. Storm denied this allegation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Semenov faces similar charges to his associates, he has not been arrested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the arrest of these developers, they have continued to receive massive <a href=\"https:\/\/coinfomania.com\/coinbase-funds-lawsuit-against-u-s-treasury-tornado\/\">support<\/a> from their followers and the crypto community who believe in privacy rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In late 2022, Pertsev\u2019s loyal followers signed over 5,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/open-source-development-is-in-danger-take-action-before-it-s-too-late-opensourcenotacrime-privacynotacrime-freealex-freepertsev-freealekseypertsev\">petitions<\/a> requesting his release.
