\u2013 the smallest unit of a <a href=\"https:\/\/coinfomania.com\/tag\/bitcoin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bitcoin<\/a> \u2013 to its word gallery.<\/p>\n<p>The new word, <strong>satoshi<\/strong>, is <a href=\"https:\/\/oed.com\/view\/Entry\/78036595\">defined<\/a> in the famous English dictionary as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the smallest monetary unit in the Bitcoin digital payment system, equal to one hundred millionth of a bitcoin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The announcement goes on to accurately recognize that the &#8216;satoshi&#8217; cryptocurrency unit is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the\u2014probably pseudonymous\u2014developer(s) of Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the &#8216;satoshi&#8217; addition means that the Oxford English Dictionary is now home to several cryptocurrency, and blockchain-related words with the definition provided for some of the most popular ones listed below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bitcoin<\/strong> \u2014A propitiatory name for a digital payment system introduced in 2009, having its own unit of account.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eid1264092710\"><strong>Cryptocurrency<\/strong> \u2014 Any of various digital payment systems operating independently of a central authority and employing cryptographic techniques to control and verify transactions in a unique unit of account; (also) the units of account of such a system, considered collectively.<\/p>\n<p>OxfordDictionaries.com, an online language resource maintained by the Oxford University Press, also contains some crypto-related words including:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/blockchain\"><strong>Blockchain<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 A digital ledger in which transactions made in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency are recorded chronologically and publicly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/miner\"><strong>Miner<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 A person who obtains units of a cryptocurrency by running computer processes to solve\u00a0specific mathematical problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/mine\"><strong>Mine<\/strong> <\/a>\u2014 [To] obtain units of (a cryptocurrency) by running a computer process to solve specific\u00a0mathematical problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a similar update regarding the concept of cryptocurrencies subtly entering mainstream consciousness, Coinfomania reported in May that <a href=\"https:\/\/coinfomania.com\/microsoft-bitcoin-currency-option-on-excel\/\">Microsoft added Bitcoin as a currency option<\/a> in spreadsheet software, Excel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) revealed in an announcement last week that it has added &#8216;satoshi&#8217;
